MIDNIGHT ZONE

Through clairvoyance, suspension, and domesticity, and within a latent state of liminality that pervades the space, Maria Constanza Ferreira’s exhibition expands across two prison cells of the Portuguese Centre of Photography. In the first, a dense atmosphere of blue hues — emerging from the photochemical process of cyanotype — evokes the devotional dimension of her work, presenting twelve main bodies orbiting in space, synthesizing an investigation that reflects images of worship, memory, and absence, inviting meditation on temporality and the planes of existence. Transitioning to the second room, the work Alminha — a video-sculpture that reinterprets the suspended souls of Purgatory — articulates and guides the path toward Midnight Zone, a two-channel film installation combining 16mm footage and digital video. Occupying the center of the space, this experimental document reveals itself as a moving painting in a narrative evocative of rituals, folk practices, and the care of the living for the dead, traversing memory, matter, and spirit — illuminating the presence of the invisible that runs throughout the entire body of work.
