These spaces, simultaneously public and intimate, are dedicated to souls in purgatory, lost in transit or suspended between worlds. They are sacred, everyday altars that serve as devotional spaces where the living offer prayers, light candles and leave flowers, characterised as liminal places between life, death and the landscape. An altar and a tomb for no one in particular, but for everyone. between synthetic crystals and light. This project explores the physical and metaphysical properties of crystals by simultaneously showcasing the multiple realities of the materials. The majority of the chemicals I utilized are over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen and aspirin. I influenced the crystal patterns shown on the paintings by utilizing varying temperatures and pressure points. A participant must look at the samples with a special 3D printed hand-held device that exposes the hidden crystal “painting.” This instrument essentially performs as a lens containing a second polarizer. The prismatic phenomenon reveals itself once the viewer successfully crosses the polarized light from both the light box and the hand-held device. My process started by filming my great aunts who, Saturday, clean the graves of our family members in thetown’s local cemetery. They also create elegant flower arrangements with plants from their gardens as offerings for their loved ones who have passed. The exhibition was a 7 week screening (August 24 -October 8 2021) on three main billboards located in the most prominent areas of the city. Three unique iterations of film screened every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day in each location.
